Twenty-Four Hours in the Life of a Woman - Final

So, we have finished the book, come on, don't tell me you didn't finish it! It was barely a two-hour read... So do you have any final comments? Feel free to keep posting about them, even though we open a new session. And, hey, don't forget to take part in the poll!

  1. Well, I also finished the book ahead of time, but not as much as other members!
It is certainly a contemporary book because it is about timeless topics. As Rocio put it, technologies have not improved human "passion management".
I was surprised by the end. Not sure what I was expecting, but certainly not such a sad end; but at the same time, it makes sense, total sense. Arantxa, I would love to hear what were you imagining for an end.
I didn't like the character of the gambler since the very first sentence that described him. And I could not get to like him at any moment afterwards, even considering Mrs. C affectionate comments on him. I did not feel understanding about the passion for gambling that overwhelmed him, but I could understand the passion for the young man that blinded Mrs. C.
By the way, J., I certainly hope Mrs. C's fate was not parallel to Mdme. Henriette's… :-)

If the interest on repeating author becomes our own barometer, do you feel like going for another Zweig? I definitely do.

  2. I am not sure what I was expecting for an end either.

My first surprise came when she missed the train: I guess I was expecting that she caught that train, they run away together and be happy ever after. This would justify passional decisions, showing that they work out sometimes, that being brave and taking the risk sometimes pay off.

I guess I have watched too many Hollywood films :-)

  3. Hello,

I have not found the book and as due date was over and I had at home two other stories of Zweig, I have read them instead. The names are: "Letter from an unknown woman" and "Leporella". They are short and very easy to read. The plot is in both very original and the ending seems to be in the same line with the book you just finished...not too happy.

I encourage you their reading, but you need to be in the mood for some drama.

    Happy summer holidays!
