The Sound and the Fury: April Seventh, 1928

The first chapter of "The sound and the fury" presents a southern family in 1928. Different topics are touched, family, children, the rich and the poor, death, segregation... from the perspective of the the youngest of all the kids in the family. What did call your attention the most?

  1. Hi cookies,
I am behind on the schedule, but I can share with you why Faulkner came to my mind when I was thinking about a new book (in Spanish only)

    1. That is so funny!
Now, in addition to reading Faulkner, I feel like watching that movie :-)

  2. Dear All!

I am also behind schedule, mainly because I am reading at a snail's pace!

I need to share my feelings with you all!

I am finding challenging to understand this part of the novel (I hope the rest are easier to follow!) and mainly, and what's more puzzling, I am finding difficult to picture the novel, to have a mental image of what I am reading in my head.

The language, the jumping back and forth in time, the characters... wow!

  3. Hello!
Yes Arancha, I agree with you, it is difficult to read! I'm willing to go on and see what happens, because, it is a little puzzling as you say. I have an edition with comments and complementary information, so I might go ahead and read these later on to clarify some things or directly go to the wikipedia explanation, might be easier!
But in any case, I'm seduced by the atmosphere Faulkner depicts, there is something very well written there to make me see certain aspects while reading. I don't know, I think it might be one of those books that you realize what they are all about after you have finished them... Did you see the video Jorge sent? So funny!

  4. I have just finished this first part and, as Arantxa, I have been reading very slowly. Mainly, because after a few pages I was very confused with the characters and timeline, and I was not understanding the story . It got to a point that I started to find it a bit boring.
However, I kept reading. It helped that I knew we were reading the story from the point of view of a character with Down syndrome and I was curious to see where it would take us. It also helped that this is a book club in which one of the goals is to "challenge" our comfort zone when reading... Isn't it?
So, as an encouragement for Arantxa and those of you with similar feelings, I will say that as the chapter advances, the characters and situations appear clearer. I am not saying "clear" but "clearer". I am still confused, but now it makes more sense to me and I actually look forward to the next chapters. Specially, to find out if certain people are confirmed to be as disagreeable, selfish or obnoxious as Luster, mother or Quentin seem to be. Also, to know more about Caddy, the father, and, overall, about the family' story.
I think, as Rocio suggests, that the first chapter, and probably the whole book, will make sense once you finish reading the book.

  5. Hello every one!
Well, it seems I had the same problem as Macarena and Arantxa!! I was reading soooo slow as I took me a while to know understand the sense of the book!
It is being a challenging book! So many changes and slang language..... Specially for me, the only one (I think) who is not a reading fan! But I must say I am curious to know what will happen next in the family!
    Big kiss to all!
    Macarena
